Samboleap Tol

Samboleap Tol (b. 1990) focuses on unearthing the postcolonial diasporic psyche, with a central focus on embodied psychological inheritance. She explores ideas of dignity, love, and family that emerge after centuries of colonial brutality.

For over a decade, she has pursued a collaborative practice by engaging with members from different postcolonial communities around the world, from London to Sydney to Rotterdam, as she listens to their stories of willpower, faith, and dignity. Through storytelling, installations and sound, she hopes to honor their spirits.

Through her work, Tol actively explores the connection between ancient (Southeast Asian) cosmologies and the contemporary social realities of postcolonial descendants as she attempts to address questions about how to relate to difficult pasts, untold truths, and the (unburied) dead. Tol hopes to create a space for relief and lament.

Tol studied at Sint Lucas School of the Arts, Central Saint Martins, and the Piet Zwart Instituut. She was an artist-in-residence at Cemeti Institute for Art & Society in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In 2023, she won the 10th edition of the Dolf Henkes Prijs. She is a research associate at The Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TrAIN), University of Arts London.
