Ayomide Tejuoso (Plantation)

Ayomide Tejuoso (Plantation) is a Nigerian artist based in Lagos, Nigeria and Geneva, Switzerland. Creating spirited, raw, and gritty visual worlds, her work is centered on the black disposition, using photography, film, and installation art to reflect on the black sacred and profane. Beginning her photography journey at the age of 15, her work began as an attempt to decontextualise the black body, process her queer identity, and navigate the violence associated with black boyhood. Referencing the gripping and pure images of Ren Hang, Enyeasi Kadara, and Ryan Mcguinley, art became a playground, an intentional plane designed to process the depths of black queer existence. As she became older she found solace in the name “Plantation”, developing a character that filled pages in her portfolio- a dejected and nihilistic being that affirmed her work as a self portrait artist. Now referencing on the creations of Arthur Jafa, Solange, and Deana Lawson, Ayomide Tejuoso’s work is focused on constructing a visual world immersed in the essence of blackness, the nature of black womanhood, and the search for safety by the black collective- the black church, the black home, and the black mother (her womb). Her work is a frenzied search for safety and perfection, the ability to intentionally think, research, and be. She has been selected and shown in notable awards, publications, and festivals, most notably being- PhotoVogue Festival 2021, Photo Vogue Voice Residency 2022, Ph Museum Women's Grant Shortlist 2022, Foam Talent 2021, and Getxophoto Festival Shortlist 2022. She continues to create across Lagos, Nigeria and Europe.
